Big Bear Lake requires property owners to maintain defensible space by cutting  weeds/grasses to under 4 inches, removing pine needles/leaf litter, and  clearing flammable vegetation (especially Manzanita/Juniper) within 100  ft of structures. Annual inspections begin in early June, with non-compliance potentially resulting in $500 citations or forced abatement fees. 

Insurance companies may demand that property owners take steps toward creating defensible space, and in some cases are threatening policy cancellation if vegetation near the home is not removed.
